To friends, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railway was always known as the "Katy" and for an eclectic roster of first generation power. When dieselization came in the late 1940s, the railroad bought motive power from all of the major builders: Alco, Baldwin, Electro-Motive Division, and Fairbanks Morse; and they had one thing in common - red paint. So, it was only fitting that when UP announced the "Proud Heritage" program to honor predecessor railroads, the MKT representative wore an attractive red attire.
