GE Drop Cab Locomotives

GE's 45-ton and 47-ton drop-center cabs are for the most part variants of the 44-Tonner. In the hobby press, the models have been referred to "military design". They shared the same basic car-body as the 44-tonner, D17000 engines, traction motors and main generator. The 47-ton model employed articulated trucks with slightly larger T/Ms. Another noticeable difference were the couplers on the 47-tonner were mounted on the trucks rather than to the frame. Lastly, the 47-ton units were non-standard gauge. Production of the 47-ton model began in 1943 and ended in 1953. Similarly, the 45-ton locomotive started in 1944 and ran for nearly a dozen years.

GE also constructed during 1944 ten 75-ton drop-cab locomotives for the US Army Transportation Corps. Equipped with low-clearance cabs, they were predicated on the more powerful 80-ton machine; all of the 75s were sent to France to help rebuild the country's rail network.
